Relationships-A Remodeling Project

I have heard about but never experienced a remodeling project before. Sure, we have done some painting and little projects around the house but my wife and I recently decided to remodel our kitchen. We have a 50-year-old house and we have been going to remodel the kitchen for the last 15 years but finally we decided it was now or never.

What does this have to do with relationships? Well, trying to decide on the style of cabinets, the counter tops, the style of doors, the color of the wood, the hardware for the doors…can be trying. I finally decided that although I spend more time in the kitchen preparing food than my wife does (she travels in her job), I would let her decide what she wanted for the kitchen.

Like most men, I really don't care what style the doors are as long as they open and what kind of hardware goes on the doors, just as long as I can open the door by pulling on the hardware. I also probably wouldn't notice the countertops as they are usually covered with something anyway.

We finally decided on middle-of-the-road type cabinets, nice but not extravagant as we will probably live in the house for a while longer but they will also add resale value.

What I wasn't prepared for was the general contractor role with having to coordinate with the plumber, the cabinet people, the counter people and the floor people and the appliance people. We bought everything from a big box store so thought that they would be talking with each other. It should not have surprised me but they don't so I'm trying to time everything and we still have to remove all of the old cabinets before we can do anything.

It has been interesting so far and the remodel should start next week and I'll let you know how it goes. I'm not looking forward to eating off of paper plates but we mostly microwave anyway so that should not change much. Now to call the plumber, then the cabinet people for an estimate on the install so I can get the young lady who calls every day from the counter installers off of my back.
